UNESCO - Public hearings on human genetic data

As genetic databanks proliferate around the world, with some countries even starting a genetic census of their population, UNESCO has begun drawing up an international convention to establish ethical guidelines in this complex field.

A first draft by a group of experts was examined by the members of a drafting group of UNESCO’s International Bioethics Committee (IBC)and by the entire Committee last November.
The Monaco hearings are part of extensive international consultations to be held about the revised draft Nine associations and institutions – representing indigenous populations, the handicapped, physicians as well as business and insurance companies – are expected to take part. The following participants have already confirmed they will attend: the World Association of Children’s Friends (AMADE), the National Association of Maori Mathematicians, Scientists and Technologists, the European Forum for Good Clinical Practice and the French Insurance Federation. The IBC drafting group will remain in Monaco on March 1 and 2 in Monaco to resume work on the text.
