Bio

Born in 1951, Mr ten Have holds a doctorate in medicine and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. After two years as a junior researcher at the Pathology Laboratory of the University of Leiden, Mr ten Have served as a physician with the Municipal Health Services of the City of Rotterdam (1978-1979).

In 1982, he joined the teaching staff of the University of Limburg, Maastricht, where he successively held the posts of Lecturer in Philosophy (1982-1985) and Professor of Philosophy and Catholic Religion at the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Health Sciences (1985-1991). From 1996 to 1999, he was a Visiting Professor at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston (UK).

Since 1991, he has been Professor of Medical Ethics at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Catholic University of Nijmegen (The Netherlands), where he has established and headed the Department of Ethics, Philosophy and History of Medicine, which has an expanding programme of research on ethical issues relating to the bio-molecular life sciences and end-of-life care. He also played an active role in the founding of a European Master of Bioethics programme in cooperation with the Universities of Louvain (Belgium), Basel (Switzerland) and Padova (Italy).

Mr ten Have is a member of numerous professional associations, committees, task forces and boards. He is the founder and secretary of the European Society for Philosophy of Medicine and Health Care. Author of many publications in his fields of specialization, Mr ten Have has also served as editor-in-chief of a number of professional journals.
