First General Conference of the European Coalition of Cities against Racism
This Conference, entitled « Sharing Competence and Empowering Communities : The Role of Cities in Challenging Racism and Discrimination », will take place from 10 to 12 May 2007 in Nuremberg, Germany. It will gather the member cities of the European Coalition, other municipalities and diverse actors of civil society committed against this challenging issue of racism and discrimination.
First General Conference of the European Coalition of Cities against RacismThe 2007 European Year of Equal Opportunities for All was launched on 30 January 2007 in Berlin on the occasion of the first European Equality Summit. The European Coalition was presented at this meeting as a network of more than 60 municipalities coming from 14 countries of Europe engaged in the struggle against racism and discrimination. Closer cooperation with European Union (EU) institutions will be explored throughout the year 2007.

In this context and on the occasion of the German Presidency of the EU, the City of Nuremberg and UNESCO will co-organize the first General Conference of the European Coalition of Cities against Racism (ECCAR) from 10 to 12 May 2007 in Nuremberg. The Administrative Secretariat of the network has been located in this city since its creation in 2004.

The representatives of NGOs, target groups of discriminations and policy makers working at the municipal and European levels will be gathered around a panel discussion on « Overcoming Racism and Discrimination – Recommendations to Municipal Authorities ».

A series of thematic discussions are foreseen as well:
  • « Racism and Discrimination in Europe: The Main Challenges Arising for Municipalities and How to Deal with Them »;
  • « How to Promote the Cooperation of Municipalities at a National and at a European Level ? »;
  • « How to Cooperate with Agents of Civil Society »;
  • and « Implementation of Practical Examples in Education, Labour Market, Housing and Health ».
Young Europeans will also be mobilised to join the « Youth Forum ».

The Conference will also discuss a few ideas for collective actions proposed to the member cities in order to strengthen the network’s capacity in terms of communication and research. After the adoption of the draft statute, the new Steering Committee will be elected.
