The first World Human Rights Moot Court Competition organized in South Africa
The first World Human Rights Moot Court Competition is organized by the University of Pretoria in cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, from October until December 2009. The Faculty of Law of the Pretoria University has developed fruitful cooperation with UNESCO. It hosts the UNESCO Chair in Law Education in Africa and the Centre for Human Rights which won the UNESCO Prize for Human Rights Education 2006.

All Law Faculties in the world are invited to participate in the first World Human Rights Moot Competition. A team of two students from your Faculty – preferable one woman and one man – is invited to submit heads of argument on the basis of a hypothetical case by 20 October 2009 at the latest.

Judges in the final round, scheduled for 9 December, will include the High Commissioner, Navi Pillay, as well as other eminent judges from international courts and tribunals around the world. The theme of the problem to be argued will be ‘Discrimination’. The official languages of the competition are English and French.

Based on the assessment of the heads of argument by a panel of experts, two teams from each of the five UN regions will be invited to participate in person in the final rounds in Pretoria in December.

Teams will be required to cover their own travelling and other expenses, although accommodation costs in Pretoria will be covered by the organizers. Teams who are unable to travel to South Africa may also be linked up to participate via video-conferencing.
