European Master's Degree in Human Rights and Democratisation (E.MA)
The Degree is an intensive one-year academic programme to educate professionals in the field of human rights and democratisation, and provide its graduates with practical work experience. It is a multidisciplinary programme that reflects the indivisible links between human rights, democracy, peace and development.

The aims of the E.MA Programme are:
  • to form high-level professionals in the field of human rights and democratisation qualified to work as academics, staff members or field workers for inter-governmental, governmental, and non-governmental organisations;
  • to provide its graduates with practical work experience;
  • to create a European network of curriculum development and staff exchange among universities in the field of human rights and democratisation.
The programme is organised by the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC). This is a centre for education, training and research activities in European policy areas related to the promotion of human rights and democracy. It was established in Venice on 15 September 2002 with the aim of providing an institutional foundation and autonomous management to the E.MA..

Currently, 41 European universities participate in the programme.

E.MA offers an action and policy-oriented approach to learning about international relations, law, philosophy, anthropology, political science and sociology. Students have the opportunity to meet and be taught by leading academics, experts (including European Union Representatives) while studying in a multi-cultural environment. The Programme offers a full semester in Venice and a semester in a participating University.

It is financed by the European Union. The Region of Veneto also provides substantial funding. Its premises are offered and managed by the Municipality of Venice.

The E.MA Programme enjoys the sponsorship of UNESCO and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and also benefits from the close co-operation of the Council of Europe, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe, and other international organisations. In November 1999, UNESCO's Director-General signed a Memorandum of Co-operation with E.MA. in order to promote education, training and research in the fields of human rights and democratisation.

The Master’s Degree is further enriched by the input given by representatives of non-governmental organisations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, Human Rights Watch, the International Commission of Jurists, and the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims. All mentioned organisations are members of the E.MA Advisory Board.
