UNESCO and World Social Forum 2005
UNESCO and World Social Forum 2005
26-31 January 2005, Porto Alegre, Brazil
UNESCO observes with interest the WSF in so far as it lays the basis for an alternative citizen movement engaged in a process of collective elaboration; works towards the establishment of a world society centred on the human person; aims at the struggle against all forms of exclusion; brings together the actors of the future, the members of civil society who are essential development partners: intellectuals, academics, and activists. UNESCO’s interest, and active participation in the WSF’s development, partake of the United nations system’s desire to recognize civil society as a major actor of international cooperation and of the reforging of links to political society.

In 2005, UNESCO in collaboration with its civil society partners, participated in several activities, all fitting into a central strategy: that of a new partnership between civil society and a new governance capable of opening up a route towards a new democratic pact for a different global society.
