Message from Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, 17 October 2008Echoing the proclamation by the United Nations of 2008-2017 as the Second United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty, I reaffirm UNESCO’s determination to act as effectively as possible in the fight against poverty worldwide, and to harness all the competences of the Organization to the achievement of this objective.

Our determination to fight against poverty calls for wide-ranging and multidimensional reflection. Poverty, as we know, is at one and the same time a question of access to resources, equity between men and women, the distribution
of wealth and the sharing of knowledge.
