Urban Development
The aim of the Urban Development Programme of UNESCO is to increase the Organization's contribution to urban public policies which respect, protect and promote inclusiveness, social cohesion and local democracy.

Our work is based on the development of multi-disciplinary knowledge, international research, capacity-building of urban professionals and civil society, in cooperation with national and local governments, and in close cooperation with other UN-agencies, such as UN-HABITAT -with whom a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 18 March 2005 (More ...).

Within this framework the Urban Development Programme focuses on the following themes:

Our past action

As of 1994, 'Cities and Urban Development' in cooperation with the UNESCO's Management of Social Transformations Programme (MOST) focused on cities as arenas of accelerated social transformations. This Programme has made a significant contribution to capacity building and transfer of comparative and policy-relevant knowledge on urban development, local democracy and citizenship through international research networks and research-action projects. It has also supported innovative initiatives concerning the training of urban professionals and promotional activities such as UNESCO-Chairs on ‘Urban Management and Sustainable Urban Planning’ (Mexico), on ‘Landscape and Environmental Design’ (Montreal)and 'Urban Policies and Citizenship' (Lyon).

UNESCO participates in the 5th World Urban Forum 2010-03-17 4:00 pm UNESCO
The fifth session of the World Urban Forum (WUF) will be held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from 22 to 26 March under the theme “The Right to the City - Bridging the Urban Divide.” The world’s leading conference on cities, which is organized by the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT) every two years, examines the most pressing problems related to the urban context.

Presentation of the book ‘WORKSHOP TUNISIE, Invention paysagère des carrières de Mahdia’ 2009-02-10 8:00 am UNESCO
On 3 February 2009 the book ‘WORKSHOP TUNISIE, Invention paysagère des carrières de Mahdia’ was presented at the University of Montreal. It is the latest publication of the UNESCO Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design at the University of Montreal-CUPEUM (Canada).

Historic Districts for All: A Social and Human Approach for Sustainable revitalization 2008-09-11 3:00 pm UNESCO
Published for a training session scheduled during World Urban Forum IV (Nanjing, China, 3-6 November 2008), this brochure, designed for local authorities, will help them become aware of the role of political will, of the importance of preserving tangible and intangible heritage and of enhancing cultural diversity, and above all, to have a better understanding of the importance of building new forms of social cohesion in cities.
