Cities, the Environment and Gender Relations
Project presented by the MOST Swiss National Committee for UNESCO
Cities, the Environment and Gender Relations This project proposes to analyse grassroots groups of women in their social and environmental relations in medium sized cities in West Africa (Senegal, Burkina Faso), in Latin America (Argentina, Brazil and Cuba), in Eastern Europe (Roumania and Bulgaria) and in Switzerland.

Read the brochure describing the project

Global objectives:

-Contributing towards strategies of social transformation and citizen participation.
-Furnishing the results to the responsible deciders and technicians as well as the people generally.
-Contributing to the body of knowledge.

Special objectives:

-To include women in policy-making.
-To empower women in the structure of social relations of power.
-To strengthen urbanity in cities.

The project proposal stems from three basic premises : firstly on the macro-level, because the "developmentalist" orientation is in crisis and the models imposed on urban society are unsustainable ; secondly the state of the urban world with its social and spatial effects (pauperisation, inequalities and exclusion, population concentration in medium sized cities in southern states) ; and finally the telltale active presence of women in the informal job market and in processes of socio-spatial organization (self-management of neighbourhoods) on a domestic and familial basis.

The full findings of the first phase have been published, in French, in a book entitled Femmes dans les crises urbaines, relations de genre et envi-ronnements urbains précaires, 2001, Karthala, Paris. This book is also available in Spanish : Empoderamiento de las mujeres en las crises urbanas, Género, medio ambiente y barrios mar-ginados, 2001, IEPALA, Madrid. In addition, some of the research teams have released their findings in a variety of other forms so that they can be used by local organisations.
