Ethics of Outer Space: expected output
  • Policy document, developed on the basis of previous COMEST work and further elaborated in close cooperation with existing bodies such as COPUOS, in order to have maximum credibility within and support from the space community for addressing the ethical issues in regard to outer space.
    The aim is to develop two types of action:
    • Standard-setting action: Feasibility study of a declaration (or other type of instrument) submitted to COMEST 4 meeting in Thailand and the 33rd General Conference, as requested by 169EXB
    • Capacity-building actions:
      • Proposals initiating and implementing projects endorsed by COMEST 4 during its 2005 meeting: e.g., education in space ethics, world management concern for space data. The proposals will be thereupon be submitted to the 33rd General Conference;
      • Creating and supporting a body of experts in the area of space ethics, who can serve as advisory team and scholarly consultants in future activities.

  • Dissemination:
    • 2 publications on the ethics of outer space
    • International conference "Mars and Minerva. The ethical and philosophical challenges of space exploration"
    • Conference on "Legal and Ethical Framework for Astronauts in space sojourns"

  • Network-building:
    • Participation in and response to COPUOS sessions as well as participation in other relevant meetings.
    • Participation to a number of ESA activities (Practitioners Forum, Ethical Working Group on Planetary protection and exobiology),
    • Explore possibilities of collaboration with other Space Agencies
