Ethics around the World: Programme of the conferences

Information about the ethics programme of UNESCO A staff member of UNESCO will explain the activities in the context of the current work plans. Activities in relation to the three Declarations in the area of ethics of science and technology Universal Declaration on the Human Genome and Human Rights International Declaration on Human Genetic Data Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights Capacity-building projects Global Ethics Observatory (GEObs) Assisting Bioethics Committees (ABC) Ethics Education Program (EEP) Awareness-raising Rotating conferences and other public events Publications The Chair (or a Member) of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) will explain of the Committee in the area of bioethics with emphasis on activities to elaborate and promote articles of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights. The President (or a Member) of the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) will explain the work of the Commission in the field of ethics of science and technology, with special emphasis on its activities in the area of environmental ethics, science ethics (Codes of conduct for scientists) and technology ethics (in particular nanotechnology ethics). Interaction with national representatives and professionals Different program scenarios are possible: Focus on bioethics committees Information can be provided and expertise on bioethics committees can be exchanged, giving advice how to establish committees, giving examples of statutes (Constitution or Terms of Reference) and practical arrangements (ABC project) Focus on ethics teaching Information can be provided as well examples of existing teaching programs so that with experts it can be discussed what can be done in this area, how networks can be created and new programs introduced or existing ones improved. (EEP project) Focus on implementation of declarations Three declarations have been adopted by UNESCO over the last ten years. Information about these declarations can be disseminated and proposals for application and promotion in the Member State discussed and developed. Focus on developing national legislation The Global Ethics Observatory Database 4 provides information about relevant legislation related to the principles of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights, as well as topical areas of bioethical concern, such as medical research with human beings, organ transplantation and stem cell research. These data can be used to discuss the status of relevant legislation in the Member State.
