COMEST Members: Somsak Chunharas
Somsak Chunharas graduated as a medical doctor from Mahidol University, Thailand. He also holds a degree in MPH from the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam and a medical board certification in preventive medicine. He has several short training courses including Medical Education, Health Care Financing (from Boston University, USA) and Health Economics (from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine).

He is currently working as the senior advisor to the department of health, ministry of public health, Thailand and also as the Secretary General, National Health Foundation, Thailand, an NGO with the mission to promote knowledge-based health systems. He has a wide range of professional working experiences as director of rural hospitals, as director and researcher in the field of health statistics, health system research, health sciences research, health policy and planning. He also was the Secretary General of the Thai Medical Council which oversees the standard and ethics of medical professions in Thailand.

His work in the field of ethics includes: director of the Thai Programme on Bioethics and Advanced Biomedical Research in collaboration with the national center of BIOTEC. Also member of the ethical conduct subcommittee, Thai Medical Council. He wrote and presents a number of papers on ethics and bioethics both in Thai and in English, such as in the Meeting of the APEC Technology Foresight Centre, in the international meetings on BIOLAW, BIOTHAILAND. He has been a member of UNESCO IGBC for Thailand.

He worked as consultant and expert with WHO, UNICEF, World Bank, European Union, in the fields of health system research, research management, bioethics, knowledge management, health services and policy development. Presently active international work includes: Member of the Board of the Council on Health Research for Development (COHRED), Member of the Advisory Committee on Health Research of two WHO regions, SEARO and EMRO, Member of the EU Regional Research Proposal Evaluation Panel and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Programme Development COHRED.
