COMEST Members: Johan Hattingh
Johan Hattingh is Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Professor of Philosophy and Head of the Unit for Environmental Ethics at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa). He is also Visiting Professor at the University of the North (South Africa). He read philosophy at the University of Stellenbosch, from which he received his BA (hon.), MA and D.Phil. He has published 40 academic articles, reports and chapters in books and 68 academic papers at national and international conferences. He is Member of the editorial board of Environmental Ethics and Co-editor of the Southern African Journal of Environmental Education, Ethics and Practice. He is a rated social scientist in terms of the system used by the South African National Research Foundation (NRF) and holds a significant NRF research award with a view to refining the concept of sustainable development and enhancing its implementation. Consults to business and industry on value issues in environmental decision-making. His areas of specialization are Applied Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Development Ethics, Professional Ethics, Engineering Ethics, Philosophy of Culture, Practical Logic and Critical Thinking Skills, Ideology Critique, Michel Foucault and Martin Heidegger.
