2nd Forum of Ministers for Social Development of East Africa

The 2nd Forum of Ministers for Social Development of East Africa will be held in Bujumbura (Burundi) from 5 to 8 October 2009. The Forum will be organized by the East African Community (EAC) and supported by UNESCO’s Management of Social Transformations Programme (MOST).

During this Forum, the EAC Ministers will be following up their commitments made during the first Forum held in September 2008 in Kigali (Rwanda) with the aim to establish common strategies. The Ministers will concentrate on four priority sectors identified as: health and social services; education, sciences and technology; culture, sports, gender, children, youth, social protection and community development; and environment and natural resources. In addition, the Ministers will highlight other priority areas where UNESCO and the EAC should continue strengthening their collaboration, namely in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the development of primary education, sport and physical education, and the promotion of gender equality. The Forum of Ministers for Social Development of East Africa was established with an ultimate goal to “provide a long-term platform to share experiences and to harmonize policies and approaches in the management of cross-cutting social concerns, such as poverty eradication as well as the overall management of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)”.
