Urban Issues
Since 1994, the MOST Programme has created networks on urban development issues such as research, planning policies and governance and has set up working groups to help build a knowledge base and develop recommendations. It has also made it possible to identify specific regional research needs, ensuring the relevance of research work undertaken in cooperation with other Sectors, in particular Natural Sciences, Education and Culture.
Urban management, municipal authorities, universities and civil society have contributed to the goals through their participation in action research projects, such as "Cities, the Environment and Gender Relations" or "Quartiers du Monde : Histoires urbaines".

Furthermore, all MOST Programme activities relating to Urban Issues have contributed to the goal of supporting international innovative initiatives in the education of urban professionals. This has included the Latin American and Caribbean Network for City Professionals and promotional activities such as UNESCO Prizes in Architecture and Landscape, UNESCO Chairs on habitat management and urban landscapes, as well as publications that have appeared in the collection “Human Settlements and their Socio-cultural Environment”.

The reports, studies and publications resulting from the work of MOST on Urban Issues during this period are available in MOST's Digital Library.

The Urban Development Programme of UNESCO continues to build on this experience and work towards developing knowledge and research, and capacity building of urban professionals, civil society and governments, in an overall aim to contribute to urban policies which respect, protect and promote the concepts relating to urban social sustainability in close cooperation with UN-HABITAT.

These activities are grouped into four themes:

- urban development and social transformations;
- social sustainability of historical districts;
- urban governance and participation;
- urban professional capacity building.
