Research on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in Africa
In accordance with the UNESCO Strategy on Human Rights, in 2004-2005, the Organization is concentrating its efforts on the development of policy-oriented research on human rights issues in Africa. Particular attention is paid to the research on threats and obstacles to the full enjoyment of human rights in UNESCO's fields of competence.

UNESCO supports the organization of regional and sub-regional consultations to identify priority areas for the research on economic, social and cultural rights and to discuss best means and practices for their effective implementation in Africa.

The activities carried out are aimed at strengthening partnerships with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and its regional offices in Africa.

Cooperation is also reinforced with the African Union, the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, National Human Rights Institutions, parliamentarians, universities, UNESCO Chairs and human rights research and training institutions.

Increased cooperation among intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental partners is aimed at creating an African Research Network on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ARNESCR) in order to contribute to the advancement of economic, social and cultural rights in the region.

Given the fact that most economic, social and cultural rights have not become yet a reality for many peoples in Africa, the development of research on these rights and main obstacles to their implementation is of paramount importance.
