Round Table on “Memory and Human Rights” concludes UNESCO’s commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
On Tuesday 14 April 2009, the Permanent Delegation of Argentina to UNESCO and the Social and Human Sciences Sector of UNESCO organized jointly a Round Table on "Memory and Human Rights" at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris (France).

Its purpose was to celebrate the creation in Buenos Aires (Argentina) of the International Centre for the Advancement of Human Rights which is the first centre in the field of human rights established under the auspices of UNESCO. As decided by UNESCO's Executive Board (180 EX/Decision 9), the signature of the Agreement between UNESCO and the Government of Argentina on 13 February 2009 concluded UNESCO’s year-long participation in the UN-wide commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Round Table “Human Rights and Memory” was opened by Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO.

The Round Table was chaired by Marcio Barbosa, Deputy Director-General of UNESCO.

The participants in the Round Table were:
  • Daniel Filmus, Senator, Representative of Argentina to the Executive Board of UNESCO,
  • Miguel-Angel Estrella, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Argentina to UNESCO,
  • Pierre Sané, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Social and Human Sciences,
  • Estela Barnes de Carlotto, President of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo and the Commission for Memory of the Province of Buenos Aires (Comisión Provincial pour la Memoria),
  • Philippe Texier, President of the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights,
  • Michel Tubiana, Honorary President of the Ligue des droits de l’Homme,
  • Louis Joinet, Former United Nations Independent expert on arbitrary detention and impunity.
A film was shown about the ceremony of the signature of the Agreement between the Government of Argentina and UNESCO on the establishment of the International Centre for the Advancement of Human Rights in Buenos Aires.
