UNESCO launches a year-long commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
 
On Human Rights Day, 10 December 2007, at its Headquarters in Paris, UNESCO will unveil the list of activities commemorating the 60th anniversary of signing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
UNESCO launches a year-long commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Mr Koďchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, will announce the launching of the commemorative events, which will be implemented during the next year in close collaboration with other United Nations entities, as well as with the civil society actors around the world.

Speakers for this event include personalities who have made a significant contribution to the human rights field, as well as experts and practitioners that will focus on such specific rights within the mandate of UNESCO as cultural rights, the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the right to education and the right to enjoy the benefits of scientific progress and its applications. Earlier, on 3-4 December, the international conference organized in Cairo, Egypt will focus on the prospects for democracy and human rights in Africa – the priority region not only for UNESCO, but also for the entire UN system.

The conference, organized by the Human Security, Democracy and Philosophy Section of the Social and Human Sciences Sector, will bring together representatives of various regional organizations, including the League of Arab States and African Union, as well as the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Organization of the Francophonie, for a debate on the role of National Commissions of Human Rights in Africa for the promotion of democracy and universal human rights principles.
