UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport Meeting 2008The session was opened by the representative of UNESCO's Director-General, Mr Wataru Iwamoto, who introduced the activities of Sport and Physical Education since the last CIGEPS meeting in March 2007.

The meeting concentrated on three main issues: the election of the Bureau; the set up of three working groups, and CIGEPS reform.

Mr Kamal Guemmar, Director of the National Institute of Higher Learning, Science and Sport Technology in Algeria was elected President of CIGEPS. Austria, Ecuador, Kenya, Lithuania, Malaysia, and Oman were elected Vice-Presidents, each representing one of the six UNESCO regions.

The CIGEPS reform was examined alongside the creation of three new working groups. The Member States and the Secretariat looked at ameliorating the cooperation strategies between NGOs, IGOs and these working groups. The new working groups are to examine :
  • Physical Education and Sport in the Education System;
  • Sport and Culture;
  • Sport and Socio-Economic Development.
Each of these working groups will be chaired by two Vice-Presidents, and the objective of those groups is to produce a report on the different issues. A specific working group has also been dedicated to the reforms of CIGEPS. This group will be chaired by Cuba, and its main priority will be to strengthen the role of CIGEPS.
