The members of the Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS) met to share with the Secretariat, under the guidance of Mr Pierre Sané, UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences (SHS), their opinions on the Working Paper on “Sport for Peace and Development”.

At the end of this consultation meeting, all participants agreed to give this document a major dimension in the overall development of the SHS core strategy. Physical Education and Sport Programme is recognized as a key component of the SHS programme and will, thus, emphasise sport in an educational, cultural, social, economical and political angle.

Mr Pierre Sané, Mr Wataru Iwamoto, Director of the Division of Social Sciences, Research and Policy, and Mr Marcellin Dally and Mr Yves Sagou, Program Specialists of the Youth, Sport and Physical Education Section, took this occasion to present the international Congress that UNESCO will organize, in cooperation with the Jamaican government, in Kingston (Jamaica) from 14 to 16 September 2008.
