UNESCO at the 6th World Forum on Sport, Education and Culture in KoreaOrganized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Busan Metropolitan City, in partnership with UNESCO, the Forum focused on the theme of “Sport and Education for the Now Generation.” The event provided UNESCO’s sport programmes with increased visibility. During the Forum, participants reiterated the importance of UNESCO’s role in policy development, promotion and improvement of physical education and sport at school. This was also endorsed in the final Declaration.

More than 800 participants from all over the world were brought together. Vyacheslav Fetisov, Russian Minister of Sport and UNESCO Champion for Sport, addressed the plenary session on “Olympic and non-Olympic Sport as a Platform for Educating Youth”. Lambis V. Nikolaou, IOC Vice-President, Nam-Sik Hur, Mayor of the Metropolitan City of Busan, and Wataru Iwamoto, Director of UNESCO’s Division of Social Sciences, Research and Policy, also spoke at the event. Kamal Guemmar, President of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS), spoke on the role of UNESCO’s International Convention against Doping in Sport.

Held every two years, the Forum sets objectives for the Olympic movement in sport, culture and education. UNESCO was invited to continue its work with the IOC in the preparation of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore.

In addition to the World Forum, UNESCO representatives participated in four other major events, held in Busan:
  • 4th Busan TAFISA World Sport For All Games, 26 September - 2 October 2008.
  • CIGEPS working Group Meeting on “Sport and Culture”, 27 September 2008.
  • Round Table on Traditional Sports and Games (TSG), 27 September 2008.
  • Asiania Sport for All Association (ASFAA) Congress, 28-30 September 2008.
On 27 September 2008, during the CIGEPS working group meeting, it was suggested that UNESCO launch an International Council for Traditional Sports and Games. In addition to this, UNESCO was invited to initiate an official UN “Traditional Sports and Games Day”, and publish a leaflet on the definition of Traditional Sports and Games.

In parallel with this, CIGEPS members reaffirmed, during the Round Table on 27 September, that the promotion of TSG requires an international fund in order to assist the preservation and promotion of sport as part of intangible cultural heritage. It was also suggested by participants that UNESCO’s International Charter on Physical Education and Sport be amended to include the promotion of TSG.
