The third edition of the Access to Human Rights Documentation is dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed on 10 December 1948.

In the half-century which has elapsed since that day, numerous human rights instruments - conventions, covenants, declarations, resolutions - have been adopted. These instruments were elaborated in order to reinforce and further develop the provisions of the Universal Declaration. The dissemination of information and documentation on human rights is ex definitio an obligation for UNESCO, which considers the promotion of education, including human rights education, as one of its principal goals. This edition has been revised, amended and updated. It therefore reflects the contemporary transformation of some basic characteristics which bear on human rights issues, for example, the end of apartheid and of East-West confrontation, and the effect of human rights norms on deeply rooted conceptions like State sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs. The information presented will be very useful for all those who are working on or interested in human rights and, in particular, for students, researchers and educators.
