01-07-2005 (Paris) - Lismas Julius is an IT Trainer at the Sengerema Community Multimedia Centre in Tanzania, one of the CMCs supported by UNESCO and giving communities in developing countries access to information and communication services. Like other CMCs, Sengerema combines a community radio station with the infrastructure of a telecentre that offers access to ICTs and short computer training courses to locals. More

24-06-2005 (Paris) - UNESCO this week installed the first of the new community multimedia centres it is establishing in Mali as part of a scale-up initiative also involving Mozambique and Senegal. The first of the new centres were installed in Niéna and San, respectively 300 and some 400 kilometres east of the capital Bamako. Within the next two weeks, CMCs will also be installed in Goundam, Banamba and Yelimane. More

22-06-2005 (Paris) - The Koutiala CMC in Mali has its first high speed Internet connection via local wireless loop, allowing it to become a mini Internet service provider for the locality. “We will provide two factories, two local NGOs and a cybercafé with a link”, commented CMC manager Mohamed Sylla, “This will enable us to cover the costs of the connection”. More

16-06-2005 (Accra) - Two community multimedia centres supported by UNESCO in Uganda reaped the rewards of their efforts to impact at the grassroot level earlier this month, when they dominated the UNICEF Children's Broadcasting Day Awards. "This is a milestone for community radio", commented Nabweru CMC manager Edward Juuko as he collected two prizes. The competition, which assessed the best dramatic program and the best participatory programming, attracted entries from a number of both commercial and community radios. More

15-06-2005 (New Delhi) - Lumbini Community Multimedia Centre (CMC) has recently organized a one-day orientation programme for blind and visually-impaired students of Shri Shanti Model Secondary School in Manigram, a village in Western Nepal. Shri Shanti local government school has about 850 students twenty-eight of which are either blind or visually impaired. More

06-06-2005 (Paris) - "We welcome the opportunity to use this research methodology – for the first time in Africa – as we think that it will be an important tool in providing better access to new information and communication technologies,” said Monsieur Adama Kansaye, the prefect of Koutiala, during the inauguration of a workshop on ethnographic action research. “We hope in particular that it will improve the access of women to these technologies in the course of fighting poverty.” More

27-05-2005 (Paris) - President Armando Guebuza of Mozambique will cut the ribbon at the new Community Multimedia Centre (CMC) in Chokwe later today, 27 May, as part of UNESCO’s CMC scale up initiative for 20 such centres across the country, combining community radio and telecentre facilities. Also present at the opening ceremony will be the head of the UNESCO Maputo office, Mr Benoit Sossou. More

02-05-2005 (Paris) - A study carried out by the Centre for Advanced Studies of African Society (CASAS), indicates that people surveyed in Mali, Ghana and Senegal appreciate African language broadcasts, want more programming in African languages and consider them to have a number of positive impacts. The study was funded by UNESCO within the framework of the Community Multimedia Centre programme. More

11-04-2005 (Paris) - The scale-up of Community Multimedia Centres in Mali has been given a boost by a new cooperation agreement between Helen Keller International Mali (HKI) and the UNESCO Bamako Office. “It makes great sense to join forces and I hope that we will be able to extend our cooperation to related activities, in particular those involving people with disabilities”, commented HKI Mali director Lina Mahy. More

16-03-2005 (Paris) - Chinyere Ljomah, founder and project officer of the Youth Repositioning Foundation in Nigeria, came across the MultiMedia Training Kit (MMTK) whilst browsing the UNESCO website.
