UNESCO to enhance community multipurpose centre in Namibia

UNESCO, in cooperation with the Namibian Ministry of Information and Communication Technologies, the Council of the Kunene Region and the Polytechnic of Namibia, will carry out an assessment of information needs of the community of Okangwati. This exercise aims at enhancing the services at the Community Multipurpose Centre in this village.
Community multipurpose centres are set up in several rural areas of Namibia to promote the innovative use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and to support research and development. Their establishment is part of UNESCO’s efforts to help its Member States improve access to public-domain governmental information, and elaborate strategies and practices on the use of ICT for knowledge creation, acquisition and sharing.
The assessment of the Okangwati Community Multipurpose Centre will take place from 22 to 29 August 2009. It will be carried out by a senior lecturer and two students in Journalism and Communication Technology from the Polytechnic of Namibia. They will start the exercise by an open information meeting with community members at the Centre premises, during which they will inform the participants about the purpose of the assessment.
Afterwards, community members, and particularly the Centre users, will be invited to complete a questionnaire and to participate in group interviews, through which evaluators will try to identify their information needs. An analysis of existing information materials (flyers, newsletters, emails, etc.) about the Community Multipurpose Centre will also take place. As an outcome of the assessment, the evaluators will prepare a final report with recommendations on how to better address the information needs of the community of Okangwati.
