UNESCO’s appeal for equality in the media – as in all other spheres – is a part of the struggle for genuine democracy in society at large and in media institutions in particular.
By creating the initiative Women Make the News, which is taking place annually, UNESCO’s Director General, Mr Koichiro Matsuura, emphasizes that the issue of gender equality must remain at the forefront of each society’s agenda and the international community until gender balance is achieved at every level in the workplace.

Women Make the News initiative aims to give prominence to the high professionalism of women journalists. UNESCO seeks to promote equal career development opportunities and equal access to decision-making power for both men and women in media newsrooms.

Women Make the News 2008 has two goals: to highlight the need to promote women journalists to decision-making positions throughout the world, and to promote gender equality in newsrooms. We wish to invite print and broadcast media to share with us features, articles, interviews and TV and radio programmes dedicated to this year’s theme Women’s Untold Stories to reveal women’s multiple talents, achievements and contributions to their communities.
