The Netherlands has joined the countries that have established National Committees for UNESCO’s Information for All Programme. The Committee is a special working group of the Subcommittee for Culture, Communication and Information of the Netherlands National Commission for UNESCO.
The Working Group is chaired by Gerard van Trier, secretary to the Board of Governors of the National Library of the Netherlands. For many years he has played an active role in cooperation between national libraries world-wide. Other members of the Working Group are Marian Koren (Netherlands Public Library Association), Sjoera Nas (Bits of Freedom, a privacy and digital rights organisation) and Sjoerd Koopman (International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions).
The main tasks of IFAP National Committees are to identify and motivate national institutions concerned with the various objectives and activities of IFAP and constitute a permanent forum to facilitate the flow of information between UNESCO/IFAP and interested national institutions. UNESCO's Information for All Programme provides a platform for international policy discussions and guidelines for action on preservation of information and universal access to it, participation of all in the emerging global information society and the ethical, legal and societal consequences of ICT developments. The Information for All Programme provides a framework for international co-operation and international and regional partnerships. It supports the development of common strategies, methods and tools for building a just and free information society and for narrowing the gap between the information rich and the information poor.
