A workshop on Information Literacy Initiatives in Central and South East European Countries was jointly organized by UNESCO and the Central European Initiative (CEI) in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 27 and 28 March 2006.
The aim of this meeting was to promote the objectives of the UNESCO Information Literacy programme and enhance co-operation with Central and South East European experts and institutions in further developing information literacy initiatives.
The workshop brought together 35 participants, information literacy professionals, policy makers and educators from 15 countries in Central and South East Europe as well as international information literacy experts. The workshop reviewed the information literacy situation in the region, discussed possible measures for its improvement, and produced a set of conclusions and recommendations. Abdelaziz Abid, who represented UNESCO at this meeting, in highlighting one of the recommendations, suggested the inclusion of information literacy in all other e-policies and activities in view of its cross-cutting function between education, research and business, and the influence it has on achieving international quality in creativity and knowledge production and use.
