Red Radial Amazónica, an association of six radio stations working towards strengthening quality information for excluded Peruvian populations, recently concluded activities supported by UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC). The project was approved for funding by the 51st IPDC Bureau in March 2007.
The IPDC-supported activities sought to develop the capacities of community and educational radios associated with Red Radial Amazónica, so that they can strengthen their actions in favor of education and civic information, and contribute to the design, implementation and monitoring of local and regional governance.

In order to strengthen capacities of journalists, producers and local communication agents, a regional workshop was organized on 1 and 2 February 2008, bringing together Red Radial Amazónica stations around the theme of “Communication and Development in the Amazon”. Three additional local workshops were organized throughout 2008 (17 January in Tarapoto, 3-4 July in Iquitos and 8-9 August in Yurimaguas) around local themes such as “Indigenous Communities and Oil Exploitation” and “The Right of Inclusion of the Amazon populations in Legislative Decrees and International Pacts”.

The activities also included the production of informative and educational programmes by each Red Radial Amazónica radio station, as well as three public debates and fora to enhance awareness and participation among civil society sectors and indigenous populations.
