Summary of the activities
Language immersion education has emerged as a uniquely constituted, highly effective program model for launching students on the road to bilingualism, multilingualism and intercultural competence.
Schoolbased immersion programs follow a variety of paths, including one-way foreign language immersion, twoway bilingual immersion, and indigenous immersion for language and culture revitalization.
While each pathway targets distinct socio-cultural contexts and educational needs, all are grounded in a set of core characteristics with a strong focus on subject matter learning as well as language development.

Under the leadership of two national centers in the U.S., this third international conference on immersion education brings these pathways together to engage in meaningful dialogue and professional exchange across languages, levels, learner audiences, program models and sociopolitical contexts.

The conference will feature the following internationally known speakers: Fred Genesee (McGill University, Canada); Philip
Hoare (Hong Kong Institute of Education); Kauanoe Kamanā and Bill "Pila" Wilson (University of Hawai'i); Roy Lyster (McGill University, Canada); and Myriam Met (National Foreign Language Center, University of Maryland).

Summary of the activities
Promotion of languages including: English as a foreign language, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Arabic and Chinese through the four 'skills' of each language. This has been devised through a didactically produced e-learning software program, 'Capturator' which takes the learner through each part of the language step - by - step. Through this new type of tool users have the possibility of accessing any updates that are done, without having to download a new version of the product - everything can be accessed online.

Initially, the student has an opportunity to test their level of their target language, which helps them determine which level of the language they are best suited to start with. The program gives the learner a score after each exercise which allows them to self assess which exercise to do next. The information
included in the program includes all of the four parts - 'listening, writing, reading, speaking' including vocabulary and grammar using real-life cultural contexts, thus promoting not only the language but culture at the same time.

Capturator’s courses are entirely original in their content and layout (i.e. intellectual proprietorship and copyright) and have been designed to comply to European Common Framework of languages and are 'SCORM' 1.2 compatible '; each language has courses available from levels A2 - B2.

Summary of the activities
Young students, in their first year of language learning, can enjoy creative writing in their mother tongue. They then pass on their story to other schools, within a chain, for completion.

All five schools in a chain, have a different mother tongue but within the same European language family, generally from 5 countries. For example, Romance languages, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Spanish.

The children will create part of a story, decode and comprehend the main ideas of a previous part of the same story from the other schools in the chain. The stories are based on an open template.

The project will act to motivate students to understand how easily they can understand other languages and the advantages of being able to communicate with their peers in other European countries. The project allows an unlimited number of schools to join the project, when it is ready. If you are interested in more information, helping the project or joining a chain, contact us.

Summary of the activities
The project brings together learners from deprived areas from the five countries involved through a round robin set of visits to each country. The aim of the project is to introduce the learners to the culture of each country through the visits as well as learning activities in between visits. As an integral part of the project learners are given the opportunity to learn a little of the language of each country and are encouraged to use their new language skills on the visits.

The partnership developed from an interest in inter-culture dialogue and awareness for learners, currently limited by social exclusion and disadvantage. All partners cited that learners attending their organisation had limited experience of travel and lacked confidence to travel alone. The name of the project ‘Crossing the Bridge as hosts and guests’ comes from an explanation provided by a partner: “The river Rhine separates the city of Cologne into two halves. Many people from deprived areas of the eastern part of the town have never crossed the river for the western parts of the cities (and vice versa). For varying reasons they would never cross, not even if the other part of the city offered better chances of living, working, greater economic prosperity or learning opportunities”.

Therefore, the project will deliver opportunities for inter-cultural awareness, explore traditions and share life-perspectives on aspiration, seeking employment and inclusion. A key activity of the project will be offering mobility opportunities to learners.

Too many adult language learners drop-out of language courses, the Dont Give Up project offers language schools, course designers and students 101 ways to learn a foreign language successfully.

The project will investigate why adults drop-out and build up a knowledge base of ways to prevent drop-outs.

The project will look at every aspect of courses. For example, reasons for taking courses, the structure and teaching of courses, problems students encounter etc. Solutions can be as simple as the colour of the classroom walls through to the overall structure of a language course.

The project will produce a book of best practices to motivate students to complete their courses.

Summary of the activities
Goal of this project is to monitor the changes in the language currently spoken by Italian young people (10 to 15 years) due to introduction of foreign words or phrases.

The project will involve 10 to 20 teachers of Italian language: they will invite their pupils to fill up individually a form containing a set of questions about their perception of foreign words embedded in the Italian language:

• Which foreign words do you know as used in every-day Italian conversation?
• Do you know Italian words with the same or similar meaning?
• Which is the rationale for selecting a foreign expression?
• In your opinion, an extensive usage of foreign words will, in a longer time framework, enrich or endanger the Italian language?

The results of this overview will be made available to teachers, university faculties and Italian cultural institutions.

Summary of the activities
Inspired by a similar event at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Languages School, International Languages Day at Thornhill Primary School was held to celebrate the rich diversity of culture and languages spoken and learnt in school. There are 29 different home languages in our school community and we were able to represent 20 of them.

Parents and children decorated, and were responsible for running, their language stalls.  All classes and some parents visited the fair and were given a ‘Passport’ into which they could place stickers next to any language in which they had learnt some words.

Our objectives were to raise awareness of the value and importance of languages and to create a sense of fun and achievement in learning. We also hoped to support our bilingual pupils by encouraging them to feel comfortable and confident in using their home languages in school and sharing their expertise with others.

    Summary of the activities
Lullabies in the original European languages, with their translations and background are available here for families, schools and children to use.

Lullabies in multiple languages are a perfect way to introduce new languages into a family setting. Every European country has its own culture of lullabies but this project will allow you to cross the cultural divide and sing and play other wonderful lullabies in your homes.

Very young children, who hear these songs, will remember them later when starting to learn foreign languages. Indeed, research shows that lullabies do much more than lulling a baby to sleep. They provide opportunities for children’s growth and development as well as promoting a loving relationship between parent and child.

The project has also made a Wiki were lullabies in additional languages can be added by users to share with all.
