Projects Certificate Program in Descriptive Linguistics and Cultural Empathy

Summary of the activities
The "diplomado en lingüística descriptiva y empatía cultural" is a 160 hour certificate course offered each summer at the State University of San Luis Potosí in collaboration with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. 

The students take four "modules" within a four week intensive schedule which include:

- Cultural Empathy
- Articulatory Phonetics
- Introduction to Descriptive Linguistics
- A choice between: literacy, linguistic methods and second language acquisition

This year, we had 20 staff and 61 students participate in the course with more than 15 distinct minority languages represented. 
The diplomado exists to offer introductory descriptive linguistic techniques and cultural appreciation to the educator, student, bilingual school teacher or mother tongue speaker of a minority language, with the intent that these students will be able to do an initial description of their mother tongue, or acquired language.  The program is also attractive to the linguistics undergraduate student who desires to interact with other Mexican cultures as part of their course of study.

Resumen de la acción
Objectivo: Contar con componentes y mecanismo de transmisión y aprehensión de conocimientos que
permitan fortalecer a los actores y depositarios culturales como patrimonios vivos de la cultura kallawaya.

Etapa 1:
- Realizar reuniones de coordinación con los kallawayas más experimentados conformando el consejo de ancianos.
- Proceder a la socializaron con los maestros kallawayas la visón de aprender para enseñar.
- Gestionar los espacios adecuados y los cronogramas de los talleres comunitarios.
- Adquirir los instrumentos pedagógicos necesarios.
- Organizar los Talleres de Transmisión y Aprehensión de conocimientos desplegados en 9 meses.

Etapa 2:
- Socialización de programas en toda la comunidad kallawaya existente en Cochabamba.
- Realización de los ciclos de talleres comunitarios cronogramados y distribuido sen 9 meses.
- Elaboración de memorias, manuales y baners de cada taller.
- Elaboración de nuestras y elementos pedagógicos de transmisión de conocimientos y aprehensión de conocimientos kallawayas.
- Participación para constituir la interculturalidad con otras expresiones culturales

Etapa 3:
- Consolidar el centro de capacitación kallawaya
- Realización encuestas de los depositarios
- Elaboración de informe Final del proyecto – Evaluación Expost
- Evaluación de resultados del proyecto

Summary of the activities
This conference will examine issues of Language revitalization and teaching through show casing Indigenous communities using the Te Ataarangi methodology. The key note speakers are Professor Bernard Spolsky (Israel), Associate Professor Naomi Losch (Hawai'i) and Dr Katerina Te Heikoko Mataira (New Zealand).

There is an Indigenous cultural excursion included in this package and the opportunity to attend a Language revitalization symposium based on the development of digital media as tools for language learning.

Summary of the activities
This project is in planning stage.
The project will foster the use of ethnic minority language through the development of vernacular language content and supplemental education resources drawing upon the ethnic group's oral traditions and expressions and other expressions of their cultural heritage. The materials that will be closely linked
to the formal curriculum topics and non-formal education programmes are prepared by the ethnic community. General objective of the project is to empower ethnic minority community by increasing their access to and encouraging their active participation in sustainable social development.

The main outcomes are:
- Increased capacity of ethnic minority group in documenting local knowledge and producing content in their own language.
- Local culture documented, safeguarded, and digitalized with multilingual content available online.
- Increased awareness, capacity and participation of communities and society at large to integrated local
knowledge into education programs.
