Icelandic Human Rights Centre

UNESCO's collaboration with the Icelandic Human Rights Centre in the field of the right to education has grown significantly in recent past.

The purpose and aim of the Center is to collect information on human rights issues in Iceland and abroad and to make this information accessible to the general public.

Furthermore, it is to advance information on human rights issues by holding conferences, seminars and meetings on human rights topics, as well as promoting human rights education and research on human rights issues.

Questions relating to the good governance and the enforcement of the right to education as part of economic, social and cultural rights, were examined at the 16th Nordic Human Rights Symposium, organized in Selfoss (Iceland) from 2–4 September 2002 by the Icelandic Human Rights Centre. The Human Rights Symposium provides a forum to the participating institutes to share their work and experience and discuss themes of common interest.

The Symposium, in which UNESCO participated, also discussed the issues in strengthening democratic processes and advancing the right to education in face of globalisation. The Symposium was addressed by His Excellency Olafs Ragnars GRIMSSON, President of Iceland, who laid emphasis on the importance of open democracy, rule of law and equality, and solidarity of human rights world wide – principles and values which UNESCO upholds.
