Announcement in ASPnet News Infos bulletin

Through ASPnet News Infos bulletin n° 17, of July 2003 (p.12), schools in the Associated Schools Project Network were informed about the declaration of 2004 as the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition.

2004 TST Poster/calendar

Within the framework of the “Breaking the Silence” Transatlantic Slave Trade (TST) Education Project, a poster/calendar featuring key international days was finalized in October 2003 and sent in November 2003 to all 7,500 schools in the Associated Schools Project Network in172 countries to help them actively observe 2004, the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition, at school level.

Regional Youth Forum of the ASPnet Transatlantic Slave Trade (TST) Education Project on “Celebrating the African Diaspora” Copenhagen, Denmark.

To help prepare 2004, a Regional Youth Forum of the ASPnet TST Education Project on “Celebrating the African Diaspora”, involving experts, resource persons and teacher and student representatives of countries participating in the TST project, was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was one of three such events held in late 2003. Each Regional Youth Forum was attended by approximately 30 participants (three per country: one teacher, two students) from countries in the region and one country from each of the two other regions participating in the TST project.

All three TST regional Youth Fora enabled young people to share their views on the causes and consequences of the TST and the contributions of the African diaspora to the world. They explored ways for schools to promote intercultural learning and mutual respect and made proposals for the observance of the international year, including developing ideas for a campaign against racism in ASPnet TST schools, and provided elements for an International Youth Forum, to be held in 2004, to celebrate the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition.

International Experts’ meeting on the development and testing of educational material for the ASPnet Transatlantic Slave Trade (TST) Education Project, Bridgetown, Barbados

An International Experts’ meeting on the development and testing of TST educational material was held parallel to the Youth Forum in Bridgetown, Barbados, 2-4 December 2003), and organized in close cooperation with the University of the West Indies (Chapel Hill Campus. The main aim of the meeting, involving some 15 experts, was to review available TST educational resource material and to plan the preparation of new material for 2004, the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition.

International Task Force Meeting of the of the ASPnet Transatlantic Slave Trade (TST) Education Project, Bridgetown, Barbados

The Fifth International TST Task Force Meeting, involving nine Task Force Members, was held in Bridgetown, Barbados on 5 December 2003. The main objectives of the meeting were to review recent results and make proposals for activities in 2004, the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition, and 2005.
