Community members in Cabo Verde taking stock of their intangible cultural heritage

Following the workshop on the implementation of the 2003 Convention held last July in Praia, 17 community members and 13 culture officers gathered in Ribeira Grande de Santiago’s communities of Centro histórico, Salineiro and Calabaceira for training on community-based inventorying.
Organized in close cooperation between the Cultural Heritage Institute of Cabo Verde (IPC) and UNESCO from 23 September to 3 October, this training workshop introduced participants to the concepts, objectives and methods of inventorying and gave them hands on field work experience. It was a fundamental step towards involving communities in Cabo Verde in identifying and documenting their intangible heritage for safeguarding purposes, as well as providing national culture officers with enhanced skills related to the methodology for community-based inventorying which will be applied in others communities throughout the country.
In view of strengthening cooperation among PALOP countries in Africa, the training workshop was co-facilitated by a senior expert from the Mozambican Institute for Socio-Cultural Research (ARPAC) and welcomed representatives from the Department for Culture of the Secretary of State for Youth, Culture and Sport of Guinea-Bissau and the National Institute of Cultural Heritage of Angola.
