The UNESCO World Heritage Centre is receiving messages expressing concern about the state of conservation of the World Heritage property "Venice and its lagoon” (Italy), inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987.

The UNESCO World Heritage Centre closely follows the state of conservation of the property with the Italian authorities.

The World Heritage Committee, at its 38th session in 2014, reviewed the state of conservation of the site. The Committee’s Decision 38COM 7B.27 regarding “Venice and its lagoon” is available on the UNESCO website at the following link: whc.unesco.org/en/decisions/6014.

A joint UNESCO/ICOMOS reactive monitoring mission as requested by the Committee will take place by the end of 2015 to assess current conditions at the property, including the evaluation of potential impacts from development proposals in accordance to the Outstanding Universal Value of the property, as well as to review if the property is faced with threats which could have deleterious effects on its inherent characteristics and meets the criteria for its inscription on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

The state of conservation of this property will again be reviewed by the World Heritage Committee at its 40th session in 2016.
