The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Cluster Office in Windhoek is seeking applications for a programme assistant in the field of culture for an initial period of 3 months.

The mission of the Culture Sector of UNESCO is to preserve and encourage cultural diversity by increasing endogenous capacities for the safeguarding and preservation of the cultural and natural tangible and intangible heritage, within the framework of the international conventions adopted to that end and of national development strategies; and to encourage creativity and development of cultural industries by stimulating reflection and exchanges of experience on cultural policies for development and helping to create conditions for understanding and intercultural dialogue between and within nations. Activities in Namibia are developed and implemented under this framework through the UNESCO office in Windhoek.

The position of the programme assistant insures assistance to the supervising officer in the implementation of activities under the Culture sector of UNESCO. The position is being recruited on a Service Contract basis and remunerated at level L3 of United Nations scales (ICSC). Individuals engaged are governed by Staff rules and regulations of UNESCO.

The main tasks and responsibilities for the position include the following:

Assist in the implementation of the activities under the Regular Programme by providing clerical, secretarial, administrative and logistical support to the Programme Specialist for Culture, including the drafting of simple correspondence, taking minutes of meetings, as well as preparation of monitoring and evaluation reports on project activities.

Assist in monitoring, recording and following up on the Culture Programme sector’s administrative and programme budget as well as facilitating day to day tasks including responding to correspondence and queries, organising meetings, making transport, visa, travel and accommodation arrangements.



The incumbent must fulfil the following requirements:

Education:
- Secondary education; preferably followed by secretarial training and/or culture related equivalent experience; good general culture.

Professional Experience:
- At least three years of relevant work experience the relevant field.
- Experience acquired in the agencies of the UN system will be considered as an advantage.

Profile:
- Familiarity or ability to quickly learn of UNESCO relevant procedures;
- Technical writing skills on issues related to culture activities;
- Very good organizational skills and ability of multitasking;
- Strong analytical and communication skills,
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize and deliver to deadlines, as well as work under pressure.
- Good computer skills including applications to establish/modify filing, reference and information systems.
- Ability to work as part of a team and to take initiatives to provide quality and timely support and services.
- Flexibility to adjust work schedules and priorities.

Personality:
- Discretion and capacity to deal efficiently and tactfully with people of different cultural backgrounds.

Language skills:
- Good communication (oral and written) skills in English.
- Fluency in other languages will be considered as an advantage.
- Good organizational and coordination skills.
