Namibia will join the rest of the world in celebrating the World Radio Day

Namibia, as in previous years, will join the rest of the world to celebrate World Radio Day (WRD) on 13 February 2015 under the theme, "youth and Radio". World Radio Day is recognized on the UN calendar as an international day which was proposed by UNESCO and endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 2012.

One must recognize that radio continues to evolve in the digital age, and it remains the medium that reaches the widest audience worldwide. It is a multi-purpose medium that helps people, including rural marginalized groups in remote communities and vulnerable people such as the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor, by offering them a platform to participate in the public debate as well as other issues that affect them in their localities.
The ultimate goal of WRD 2015 is to increase the level of participation of young people in radio, not just as listeners but as producers of content, in particular along three levels:
(a) Radio programmes conceived and produced by young people,
(b) Radio programmes including the participation of young people in the production team, and
(c) Radio programmes targeted towards young people.

Namibia will conduct the following activities within the framework of this year's theme.
(a) 3-day workshop for radio practitioners on producing participatory and relevant youth programmes. The workshop will be attended by participants from the national broadcaster, community radios, and commercial radios.
(b)"Youth Take over the Radio" event. Young people will be allowed to go into the studio and present their own programmes on this year’s theme.
(c)The main event will take place on 13 February 2015 at the Northern Auditorium, Polytechnic of Namibia, from 08:00 to 13:00. The following will take place as part of the main event:
(i) Live broadcasting - decentralized to each radio station, through NBC.
(ii) Speeches from high level Government and UN officials, and
(iii) A panel discussion on the sub-theme, "The relevance of radio to Namibian youth".
World Radio Day is about celebrating radio, why we love it and why we need it today more than ever. A day to remember the unique power of radio to touch lives and bring people together across every corner of the globe. Join the celebration!
