Africa will be celebrating its culture and artistic expression at UNESCO from 21 to 25 May. Organized by the Africa Group of member states to mark Africa Day (25 May), several events will highlight the wealth and diversity of the continent’s intangible heritage. 

africa_week.jpg The Week will begin with the inauguration of an exhibition of African arts and craft on 21 May (5 p.m., Salle des Pas Perdus). Two African films, Bamako and a documentary on The Virtual Museum of Gabonese Arts and Traditions, will be shown on 22 and 23 May (6 p.m., Rooms XII and II).
A conference about Africa's Intangible Heritage will be held on 24 May (3 - 5 p.m., Room IV) under the auspices of Yolande Bike, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Gabon to UNESCO and President of the Africa Group. Ousmane Blondin Diop, Deputy Permanent Delegate of Senegal, will moderate the debate and Dominique Sewane, Professor at the Institut d’études politiques de Paris, Inoussa Ousseini, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Niger to UNESCO and Mamadou Kolade, author of studies on the balafon musical instrument, will share their expertise with the public.
On 25 May (6.30 - 8.30 p.m., Room I), groups from Burundi, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Mauritius, Niger, Senegal, Tunisia and Uganda will perform in a concert that will include much balafon music. The concert will be followed by an African buffet dinner (8.30 - 10.30 p.m.).
