Evaluation of the Pilot Phase of the Nigeria-UNESCO Science & Technology Education Project (STE)
August 2008 - The Nigeria-UNESCO Special Science and Technology Education Project distributes mathematics, science and micro-science kits to schools in Nigeria and provides training to primary mathematics teachers and primary and secondary science teachers and Federal and State Inspectors.
The Project’s objectives are:
Rebuilding science education in Nigeria by improving the capacity of primary and secondary schools teaching and learning of science and technology through the revitalization of laboratories which are fully furnished with science learning equipment.
Building a critical mass of science educators at the primary and secondary levels who are able to teach science in the class in a way that links the subjects learned with the real world experiences of the students.
Making progress in popularizing the nature and advantages of active learning among teachers, science and technology educators generally, and particularly toward sustaining lifelong learning.
The purpose of the evaluation is to inform stakeholders on the successes, challenges and recommendations on strategies to be adapted for the next phase of the Project. In particular, the evaluation reviews the successes of the pilot phase of the Project, the major achievements and challenges faced in the design, planning and implementation of the Project, the quality of organizational management, programme implementation systems and associated resource allocation, and the implications for replication in other countries and scaling-up.
