The mission of the Internal Oversight Service is to provide the Director-General with independent, objective assurance, systematic review and advice. The work of IOS is designed to add value and improve programme design, delivery and operations.

It helps UNESCO accomplish its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluating and improving the effectiveness of risk and results based management, control and governance processes.

The IOS Charter describes in detail the mission, scope of work, authority, responsibility, accountability and independence, and standards that guide the work of IOS.
