Sustainable production and consumption

The aim of this website is to provide information on UNESCO's response to the implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, encapsulated in the Mauritius Strategy and the Mauritius Declaration adopted by the International Meeting held in Mauritius in January 2005.

'Sustainable production and consumption' is not central in UNESCO’s mandate and programme. The Organization’s contribution is mainly through activities relating to ‘Education for Sustainable Development’ (see Chapter 14, left). UNESCO is also one of many institutions worldwide that is currently drawing up an audit of its ‘ecological footprint’, with a view to establishing a benchmark for monitoring progress and trends.

Among UN institutions with work in this thematic area of sustainable production and consumption is the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its Division of Technology, Industry and Economics.
