ED filles.jpg Heads of UNESCO and UNICEF hosted breakfast meeting on women’s and girls’ education

“Women’s and Girls’ Education: A Development Imperative” is the theme of a ministerial roundtable breakfast meeting co-hosted by UNESCO’s Director-General and UNICEF’s Executive-Director and which took place on 30 June at the UN, New York.

The question “Why invest in women’s and girls’ education?” was addressed at the breakfast, which took place during the Annual Ministerial Review of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It was organized within the framework of the High-Level Segment, which focuses on issues related to gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Invitees included representatives of Member States and international organizations as well as a wide range of stakeholders from civil society, foundations and the private sector.

ECOSOC is a central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States and the UN system.

The outcome of the 2010 Annual Ministerial Review session is expected to be a Ministerial Declaration on "Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to gender equality and the empowerment of women".
