The Seychelles joined UNESCO on 18 October 1976. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office Dar es Salaam (Tanzania).

The Seychelles, Indian Ocean archipelago with rich ethnic diversity, is committed to respecting cultural and natural heritage, including intangible heritage. It has ratified both the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and the Convention on the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In this context, the Seychelles are active in the “Slave Route Project”, which restitutes the history of slave trading. Research for the “Inventory of Sites of Memory in the Indian Ocean Region” identifies and registers islands’ oral memory.

The Seychelles, vulnerable to climate change, give priority to environment protection and natural disaster prevention. The country is linked to the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (IOTWS).
