The Kingdom of Bahrain joined UNESCO on 18 January 1972.
The country is covered by the UNESCO Office Doha, in Qatar. Opened in 1976, the cluster office represents UNESCO in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
Bahrain and UNESCO signed an agreement in 2005 to develop new technical disciplines in Bahrain, launching a collaborative project to enhance the country’s technical and vocational education programme. UNESCO has provided assistance to update Bahrain’s commercial education curriculum at the secondary level.
Bahrain is a member of the Council of the International Centre for Synchrotron Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East (SESAME).
In communication, the Kingdom of Bahrain finances the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Education. The US$ 50,000 prize is a symbol of the close cooperation between UNESCO and Bahrain.
