The Sultanate of Oman joined UNESCO on 10 February 1972.
The country is covered by the UNESCO Office Doha, in Qatar. Opened in 1976, the cluster office represents UNESCO in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

The Sultanate of Oman and UNESCO have jointly organized several conferences (including an April 2005 seminar in Muscat on the reform of secondary education in the Arab states).

The country finances the biennial Sultan Qaboos Prize for Environmental Preservation, which honours significant contributions in this domain.

Oman has a UNESCO Chair in Seafood Biotechnology, established in 2001 at Sultan Qaboos University.

Four Omani cultural sites are inscribed on the World Heritage List.
