Bangladesh joined UNESCO on October 27, 1972. The Organization’s National Office is based in Dhaka.

Bangladesh is one of the nine most populated countries in the world (E-9). Education is a principal area of cooperation with UNESCO. The country is currently implementing a national plan of action for Education for All, launched in 2003.

The country has three World Heritage sites, one natural and two cultural.
UNESCO launched an international campaign, in 1985, to safeguard Paharpur Vihara and several mosques in Bagerhat, built in the 15th century by the warrior-saint Khan Jahan. All of these monuments have greatly suffered over the centuries due to the high saline levels of the waterlogged ground in the region and also the encroaching forest.

In 2006, as part of a UNESCO-supported network on ICT innovations for poverty reduction, the Youth Community Multimedia Centre (YCMC) in Sitakund sub-district of Bangladesh created a Forum Theatre to popularize community radio.
