Finland joined UNESCO on 10 October 1956.

Six cultural sites and one natural site from Finland appear on the World Heritage List. Finland shares one of these cultural sites, the Struve Geodetic Arc, with nine other European countries. This chain of survey triangulations contributed to defining and measuring the Earth's exact size and shape. Another, Rauma, is one of the oldest harbours in the country, situated on the Gulf of Bothnia. Built around a Franciscan monastery, where the mid-15th-century Holy Cross Church still stands, it is an outstanding example of an old Nordic city constructed in wood.

The Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld Collection was included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in 1997. Assembled by the founder of the history of cartography, its 5000 volumes comprise one of the most complete collections of cartographic atlases, geographical works and travel literature.
