A workshop to develop community radio in Maldives

A National Orientation Workshop on Community Radio will take place in Maldives from 12 to 15 June 2007.
This activity, first of its kind in Maldives, is organized by the Voice of Maldives (VOM) and the Ministry of Information and Arts in collaboration with UNESCO. Its objective is to introduce the concept of community radio and review best practices in this field in order to develop guidelines for a national policy on media. It is also expected that community participation in this process, especially in Atoll, may be enhanced by the capacity building of potential community radio trainers.
The one-day orientation programme, scheduled for 12 June in Male, plans a mix of theoretical and interactive sessions on the following themes:
The two-day hands-on training workshop, to be held from 13 to 15 June at the Haa Dhaalu Atoll Media Center, will provide some 16 potential trainers with a practical orientation into the techniques of community radio broadcasting. It will teach them how to identify specific island community problems, to express and share views both inside and outside of their community.
The Maldives government is currently formulating policies to free all media through a gradual process. Temporary frequencies are already allowed for private radio operations. A set of six different bills relating to the media have been formulated and is expected to come before the Parliament later this month.
Community broadcasting, a vital tool in the development of island communities, is an integral element within the Maldives Broadcasting Bill.

- showcasing of experiences from other parts of Asia, including community multimedia centres (CMC);
- technical and regulatory issues and requirements.
