Greece

Greece joined UNESCO on November 4, 1946.

The Cultural Olympics, organized by Greece, is an example of its close cooperation with UNESCO in culture. The project, promoting cultural diversity, reached its high point in 2004, year of the Athens Olympic Games.

Greece has also contributed to the preservation of the Afghan cultural heritage (reconstruction of the Kabul Museum) and the cultural heritage of Kosovo (Serbia).

There are seven UNESCO Chairs in Greece.

Greece hosted the 4th International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Physical Education and Sport in 2004, which focused on the draft of the International Convention Against Doping in Sport and strategy to reinforce physical education and sports in school.

UNESCO and Greece also collaborate on the Melina Mercouri International Prize for the Safeguarding and Management of Cultural Landscapes, named after a pioneer in sustainable development. It is awarded every two years to honour outstanding action to safeguard the world’s major cultural landscapes.

On 5 December 2007, UNESCO and the Ministry of State for Sports signed an agreement to establish an Observatory on women, sports, and physical education.

Greece hosted the 6th Regional Summit of Heads of State of South-East Europe held in mid-June 2008 in Athens.
