UNESCO’s Sector for External Relations and Cooperation (ERC) has the main task of developing and intensifying relations between UNESCO and NGOs, foundations and similar institutions. For more information, please look at the ERC website or contact:

UNESCO’s cooperation with NGOs is ruled by the Directives concerning relations with non-governmental organisations (these directives can be found on the ERC website). The areas of interest of any organisation wishing to enter into relations with UNESCO must be in line with UNESCO’s fields of competence. The first step towards cooperation between an NGO and UNESCO should be the submission of a brief description of the projects that the organisation hopes to implement in cooperation with UNESCO. As the establishment of operational relations with UNESCO is subject to statutory conditions, the following documents should be submitted along with the project description:
  • a copy of the NGO statutes/By Laws;
  • a copy of the instrument of legal recognition of the NGO;
  • a list of members with their nationalities;
  • a recent two-year report of activities.
For NGOs that work specifically with young people, the Joint Programmatic Committee on Youth of the NGO Liaison Committee (responsible for ensuring liaison between UNESCO its partner NGOs) has a website. More ….
