Lebanon – Post-war assistance for traumatised children

This project provides children with psycho-social support to help them overcome their stress, at the same time as promoting positive values and a sense of belonging and citizenship.

The recent war in Lebanon badly affected the psychological state of many young people and children, especially in the South, the Bekaa and the Dahieh regions. Children were subjected to stressful experiences including the loss of parents, relatives and friends, the destruction of homes, displacement and other traumatic experiences. If left unaddressed, these experiences can create further negative mental patterns for young people: violence, isolation and social exclusion, etc. This situation called for a programme, both formal and non formal, to provide children with psycho-social support to help them overcome their stress, at the same time as promoting positive values and a sense of belonging and citizenship. The best way to achieve this was deemed to be specialised teacher training and work with NGO animators on educational, artistic and recreational cultural activities. Affected children and youths were given the space to discuss and tackle harmful experiences and helped to turn school into a more joyful and listening place for them.
